“Practically Speaking- what does this mean for my life today?”
That’s the question we are being challenged to ask this week. 2 Peter says some pretty hard words in the 1st chapter. He says it’s possible for our knowledge of Christ to be ineffective and unproductive. (2 Peter 1:8) These are words that no one wants to hear. If you deliver a speech in a communications class and the professor says, “Thank you, but you simply are an ineffective communicator.”- that’s not good. If you are on a sports team and the coach says “sorry __, you are just unproductive in your role”- not the thing you want to hear. You never want your teacher to send home a report that says you are ineffective and unproductive as a student.
These are almost words without hope. They don’t say your average, they say you are failing, you are not accomplishing the task before you. But what about your knowledge of Christ? When is the last time you evaluated your knowledge of Christ by asking if you were being effective and productive in your knowledge of Him?
We saw last night that 2 Peter said you stop this by adding to your faith goodness, and to goodness knowledge. The word for knowledge is gnosis- practical knowledge, not a head academic knowledge, but a real, application knowledge. So the question for this week is this- as you read scripture, hear sermons, sing songs, will you apply it to your life? As you read, listen, study, pray, etc… ask this question- “Practically speaking- what does this mean for my life today?”
Apply Christ to your life, don’t know Him, apply it to your life.
This week “be all the more eager”(2 peter 1:10) to apply Christ to your life as you “participate”(2 peter 1:4) in what God is up to in your life.
